Professor Sada and Professor Turo are the Pokemon Professors in the Gen 9 games Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet (SV). Learn the meaning of the names Sada and Turo, if their names are based on trees, and what games each of them appear in as version exclusives.
List of Contents
Professor Sada from pasada (past) |
Professor Turo from futuro (future) |
The names of the Professors, Sada and Turo, are based off the Spanish words for “past” and “future”, respectively. Sada comes from Pasada (Spanish feminine word for “past”), while Turo comes from Futuro (Spanish masculine word for “future”).
The main thing that sets Pokemon Scarlet and Violet apart are their themes of past and future respectively. With each game having their own Paradox Pokemon that come from a distant time, Professor Sada studies Pokemon from the distant past, while Professor Turo studies about Pokemon from the distant future.
The box legendaries, Koraidon and Miraidon, also have names that reflect this, with Koraidon's name originating from the Japanese korai (古来, ancient past), and Miraidon's name originating from the Japanese mirai (未来, future).
Gen 9 Legendaries: Koraidon and Miraidon Bike Forms
As the region of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet appears to be based on Spain, it is fitting that Spanish words would serve as the origin for these characters' names.
Paldea Region Map and Locations
Starting with Professor Laventon in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, it appears that Game Freak may be bucking the trend of naming Professors after trees, and just going with plants instead.
As many of the previous Pokemon Professors were named after flora, it's understandable to expect that plants Sada and Turo might exist as well, but that is not the case for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
Despite having the title of Professor, them not being named after flora actually hints that they are not this region's equivalent of a Professor as compared to previous games. That title actually goes to Director Clavell and our homeroom teacher, Mr. Jacq, who are named after plants.
Like the previous iterations of Pokemon Professors, Director Clavell (named after the Catalan word for Cloves which is a tree) was the one responsible with giving us our Starter Pokemon and introduces us at the beginning of the game to the world of Pokemon.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jacq (named after the scientific name of the Common Zinnia) is the one who gives us the Pokedex App and rates our completion with rewards in the same vein Professor Oak did with his Aides.

For the first time in the Pokemon series, Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet have version exclusive Professors. Pokemon Scarlet players will get to meet Professor Sada while Pokemon Violet players will be guided by Professor Turo instead.
We soon learn that the Professor we meet at the beginning of our adventure is not exactly who they say they are. At the lab at the bottom of Area Zero, the professor we meet reveals the truth that the Professor we know is an AI created by their respective professor while the real professor has died due to injuries sustained by protecting Koraidon/Miraidon.
While Sada/Turo wished to let Pokemon of the past/future keep entering the modern day through the time machine, the AI refuses to let the region's ecosystem be ruined by the Paradox Pokemon and asks for the player's help in shutting down the time machine. The AI is, however, programmed to protect the time machine, so the player is forced to battle it and the Paradox Pokemon it wields against the AI's will.
Version Differences: Scarlet vs. Violet
Professor Sada has a very rough, prehistoric looking outfit and hairstyle, which seems to suit her connection with the past as hinted at in her name, and sharing her appearance in Pokemon Scarlet with the dinosaur-like Koraidon.
In line with her design, Professor Sada also uses Paradox Pokemon from the ancient past. These Pokemon are prehistoric looking versions of modern day Pokemon like Flutter Mane to Misdreavus, and Scream Tail to Jigglypuff.
Her Ace is Koraidon, an ancient ancestor of Cyclizar. This Koraidon is more aggressive compared to the one the player gets as shown that it quickly intimidates our own Koraidon into not even wanting to come out of its Pokeball.

Professor Turo has a very sleek, modern looking outfit and hairstyle, matching with his connection with the future implied by his name, and sharing his appearance in Pokemon Violet with the futuristic Miraidon.
In line with his design, Professor Turo also uses Paradox Pokemon from the distant future. These Pokemon are robotic looking versions of modern day Pokemon like Iron Bundle to Delibird, and Iron Jugulis to Hydreigon.
His Ace is Miraidon, a future descendant of Cyclizar. This Miraidon is more aggressive compared to the one the player gets as shown that it quickly intimidates our own Miraidon into not even wanting to come out of its Pokeball.
