How to Learn and Transfer Egg Moves

Learn Egg Moves by transferring it between Pokemon of any egg group, or breeding together a Pokemon who knows the Egg Move and a compatible Pokemon of a different species that you want to learn the Egg Move. Read on to learn the process of learning, transfering, and passing down Egg Moves in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV).

Transferring Egg Moves between two Pokemon has never been easier! In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, two Pokemon don't even need to be in the same egg group to transfer Egg Moves.

You will need a Pokemon that already knows the Egg Move you want to transfer, and another Pokemon that is able to learn the egg move, has an empty move slot, and is holding the Mirror Herb.

Example of Transferring Egg Moves

For example, let's say you wanted to obtain a Marill with Belly Drum. Makuhita is a Pokemon that can learn Belly Drum at Lv. 25. Add a Makuhita that knows Belly Drum to your party.

Next, add a Marill with an empty move slot to your party. Make sure it is holding a Mirror Herb. Remove all other Pokemon from your party and start a Picnic.

After running around in the picnic for about a minute or two, pack up and end the picnic. By checking Marill's summary screen, its previously empty move slot should now have Belly Drum!

Forget Moves Menu - Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV)

If a Pokemon does not have an empty move slot, you won't be able to transfer an Egg Move to it.

Make sure the receiving Pokemon only has 3 moves or less. To clear up move slots, you'll have to make your Pokemon forget a move through the Moves menu in that Pokemon's summary. It's the same technique as remembering a move, but instead of selecting "Remember Moves", you select "Forget a Move".

Pokemon don't have to be in the same Egg Group

In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, you can now transfer egg moves regardless of gender, species, and even egg group.

Egg Moves are Transferred from Top to Bottom

If Pokemon A has multiple egg moves that can be transferred to Pokemon B, the moves will be transferred in the same order as they are listed on the Pokemon's Summary page, provided that there are enough empty move slots. If you only intend to transfer one Egg Move, be sure to place that move at the top of the list.

Breeding Egg Moves

Zangoose ImageZangoose

Child Pokemon
Eiscue (Ice Face) ImageEiscue (Ice Face)

Put a male (♂) and a female (♀) Pokemon together during a picnic. Both Pokemon have to be from the same Egg Group to breed an Egg together. The male has to have the Egg Move in its learnset.

The resulting child Pokemon will be the same species as the female, but will have the Egg Move of the male Pokemon.

In the example above a Male Zangoose with Belly Drum can breed with a Female Eiscue. Since they are both in the Field Egg Group and Belly Drum is an Egg Move for Eiscue, this results in an Eiscue offspring which will hatch knowing Belly Drum.

What are Egg Moves?

Moves Inherited Through Breeding or Transferring

Egg Moves are moves that a Pokemon is only normally able to inherit through breeding. Some species of Pokemon can only learn a certain move via Egg Move, as they're not able to learn the move via Level Up, TM, or Move Tutor.

How to Get and Breed for Hidden Abilities

Check the number of moves a Pokemon can inherit

When a Pokemon is born knowing Egg Moves, if there are 5 or more possible Egg Moves it could learn from its parents, there are rules in place which determine which of the Egg Moves the Pokemon will learn. Check the list of Egg Moves carefully if there's a certain move you definitely want the child Pokemon to learn.

Rules for Inheriting Egg Moves
1. The moves will be remembered in order starting with those known by the father, then continuing to those known by the mother
2. If the number of learnable Egg Moves exceeds 5, the remembered moves will be forgotten starting with those at the top of the father's move list

Can Be Relearned After Forgotten

If a Pokemon who learned an Egg Move from breeding chooses to forget it to make room for another move, the Egg Move can be relearned later.
