This is a build that focuses on offense. Gyarados gets an extra 50% boost on top of regular STAB when it Terastallizes into a pure Water Type. On top of this, Gyarados' Attack is boosted a further stage for each KO it gets. As Gyarados has a wide ranging movepool, there are many coverage options at its disposal to hit almost any Type for weakness. With the recommended moveset, Gyarados can hit two thirds of all Types for weakness.
Hurricane | Powerful STAB boosted Flying Type move with relatively low accuracy. May work as a counter to bulky Fighting Type Pokemon if they begin to gain relevance in the meta. |
---|---|
Dragon Dance | A move to raise Attack and Speed stats. Makes it easier to defeat opposing Pokemon and goes well with Moxie. |
Taunt | Useful for stopping any attempts of using status moves to weaken Gyarados. |
Iron Head | Useful against Fairy-types. |

EV Spread | 244 HP / 12 Atk / 252 Spe |

Held Item | Rocky Helmet |
Moveset | ・
Waterfall
・ Earthquake ・ Thunder Wave ・ Taunt |
This build makes use of an Impish nature and Ground Tera Type to use Gyarados as a tank for physical damage. The Rocky Helmet held item punishes opponents who use contact moves, which are generally Physical taking advantage of Gyarados' relatively lower Defense.
Ice Fang | This move is for countering Dragon and Grass-types. Physical Ice-type moves work well with Gyarados's stats. |
---|---|
Iron Head | Effective against Fairy-type Pokemon like Mimikyu and Sylveon. |
Hurricane | Powerful STAB boosted Flying Type move with relatively low accuracy. Good for countering Grass and Fighting Type Pokemon like Breloom and Meowscarada. |

Ability | Intimidate |
Tera Type |
・Allows it to win the Wash Rotom matchup as well as other Water mirror matches. ・Gains resistance to Electric to replace its 4x weakness. ・Could fill a niche role in current meta. ・Gains immunity to Electric to replace its 4x weakness. ・Good defensive Typing ・Gets power increase on Earthquake |
Held Item | Lum Berry |
Moveset | ・
Rest
・ Dragon Dance ・ Waterfall ・Tera Type

Tera Blast
・Tera Type

Earthquake
|
This set uses Gyarados with Intimidate holding Lum Berry to wake up after using Rest to recover HP. It is built to withstand physical attacks from opponents thanks to its more defensive Typing (no more 4x weakness) and Intimidate to cut the opponents Attack. It can also be used as an attacker with Dragon Dance.
Sleep Talk | Gives it an option if it is unable to activate its berry to wake up. |

Moveset | ・
Waterfall
・ Tera Blast ・ Dragon Dance ・ Protect |
Gyarados is an easy slot to most teams, with reliable damage output and a powerful set up move in Dragon Dance. Flying Tera Blast allows Gyarados to hit most Pokemon who aren't resistant to it, while Waterfall is a trusted move that can also be used to fish for flinches.
It is also a good match against Great Tusk and Talonflame, as it can soak up a Will-O-Wisp with its Lum Berry, and take out Talonflame with Waterfall. It also resists Great Tusk's Fighting-type Moves, and is immune to Ground.
Taunt | Useful for stopping opposing Pokemon from setting up. |
---|
Thanks to Gyarados' high stats and abundant moveset, it is best used as an ace attacker. In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Gyarados can get an added Tera Boost to its STAB Types or gain a new Tera Stab for one of its coverage moves, while removing its 4x Electric weakness, making it a very strong competitor.
Gyarados' Intimidate Ability lowers the enemy's Attack, furthering its utility against physical attackers. In addition to its offensive capability, spending EVs on Gyarados' HP and Terastallizing it allows it to gain decent bulk.
Gyarados is 4x weak to Electric-type Pokemon like Wash Rotom and Jolteon. Therefore, teaming it up with Pokemon strong against Electric-types will help Gyarados take the stage and have an active role.
As Gyarados is a Physical Attacker it teams well with Pokemon that can attack opposing Pokemon's Special Defense.
Lead Attacker | Back Up Attacker | Utility |

Gyarados | Gholdengo | Glimmora |
Stealth Rock and Disruption | Tanky Physical Attacker | Lead Attacker |
---|---|---|
Hippowdon | Gyarados | Dragapult |

---|---|---|
Mimikyu | Gyarados | Garganacl |
Support | Physical Attacker |
---|---|
Grimmsnarl | Gyarados |
Special Attacker | Redirection / Disruption |
Volcarona | Amoonguss |
Grimmsnarl is a good partner for Gyarados because of its ability to set up Screens and help Gyarados defensively. Additionally, it can also debuff Special Attacking Electric-types with Spirit Break.
Amoonguss is also great for redirecting Electric-type Attacks into itself with Rage Powder, or putting threats to sleep with Spore.
Volcarona can be taught Heat Wave to deal with Steel-types who might attempt to wall Gyarados.
Electric-type moves are 4x effective on Gyarados, so this is of course a very simple way to deal with Gyarados. However, as this is an obvious counter, many Gyarados players may prepare their Gyarados with answers to Electric Type threats such as Earthquake or a Grass or Ground Tera Typing.
Gyarados's main weapons are the physical Water-type moves Waterfall and Earthquake, so Pokemon with natural physical bulk, or who can take these at half damage with Will-O-Wisp burns, Intimidate, etc, can effectively deal with Gyarados' wrath. Additionally, be wary as Gyarados is hard to read, and may use Dragon Dance or Taunt.
As Gyarados relies on its Intimidate to cut down the opponents Attack stat, and its own Special Defense being relatively low, Special Attackers are an effective counter to Gyarados.
Pokemon | Description |

Wash Rotom | Ranking: ★★★★★

Hydreigon | Ranking: ★★★★★
・Ignores Intimidate thanks to being a Special Attacker. ・Resists most of Gyarados' moveset |
Garganacl | Ranking: ★★★★
・Can tank Gyarados' Waterfall (3-hit KO) ・Can deal decent damage and residual damage with its Salt Cure ▶️Garganacl Best Movesets |
