Power Whip
・ Spikes ・ Rapid Spin ・ Strength Sap |
Brambleghast's Wind Rider Ability gives it a niche as an offensive lead and counter to phazers such as Hippowdon and Ting-Lu. Not only does it nullify Whirlwind's effect, it also increases Brambleghast's Atack by one stage.
This Ability also gives it immunity to offensive wind-based moves such as Blizzard, Hurricane, and Heat Wave.
Power Whip is its main STAB move, a strong Grass-type STAB that benefits from the Attack boost from Wind Rider and
allows it to threaten Ground and Water-type Pokemon. Spikes is Brambleghast's main support move and, thanks to its Ghost-typing, it can set up the maximum of three layers as it's immune to Rapid Spin.
Brambleghast can also use Rapid Spin itself to remove entry hazards while also boosting its Speed by one stage. Strength Sap is its last move and allows it to recover health based on the target's effective Attack stat, while also lowering their Attack by one stage.
Heavy-Duty Boots is the preferred item for this build so that it can switch into entry hazards without getting damaged.
Leech Seed | A good alternative to Spikes but has no effect on Grass-types, as well as Gholdengo and Garganacl. |
---|---|
Bullet Seed | A weaker Grass-type STAB that allows Brambleghast to take on Substitute users, as well as break Focus Sash and Sturdy from opposing leads. |
The following calculations take into account Brambleghast's Offensive EV spread with a Jolly Nature and a +1 Attack boost from Wind Rider.

Brambleghast matches up favorably against most of the new top threats in Regulation D.
Its Wind Rider Ability gives it a valuable immunity to Tornadus' Bleakwind Storm and Heatran's Heat Wave, while its Ghost and Grass typing gives it an immunity to Rillaboom's Fake Out and Ursaluna's Facade, as well as resistances to Rillaboom's Wood Hammer and Rapid Strike Urshifu's Surging Strikes.
Phantom Force | A powerful Ghost STAB option with the downside of being delayed a turn. It is able to evade attacks, however, as well as being able to deal damage through Protect. |
---|---|
Seed Bomb | A slightly weaker Grass-type STAB but has more reliable accuracy. |

・ Leech Seed ・ Power Whip ・ Tera Blast |
Brambleghast is easier to setup with in Doubles since its Tailwind from its teammates activates its Wind Rider Ability.
This build revolves around setting up Substitute and using Leech Seed to pressure opposing Pokemon from staying, while Power Whip hits hard with the Attack boost from Wind Rider.
Its last move is Tera Blast and becomes a reliable physical Ghost-type move once Brambleghast terastallizes into a pure Ghost-type. Life Orb is the preferred item for this build to boost the damage of its STAB moves.
Shadow Sneak | A weaker Ghost-type STAB that has +1 priority. |
---|---|
Seed Bomb | A slightly weaker Grass-type STAB but has more reliable accuracy. |
The following calculations take into account Brambleghast's Offensive EV spread with an Adamant Nature, Life Orb boost, and a +1 Attack boost from Wind Rider.

Item: Leftovers | Power Whip 281-330 (178.9 - 210.1%) Guaranteed OHKO |
Item: Leftovers | Power Whip 273-322 (135.1 - 159.4%) Guaranteed OHKO |
Item: Leftovers | 374-442 (192.7 - 227.8%) Guaranteed OHKO |
Brambleghast has a specific niche in Singles as an offensive lead that checks phazers like Hippowdon and Ting-Lu that rely on Whirlwind.
It's also one of the few Pokemon that can spinblock and set up its own hazards, while also removing hazards set on its field with its own Rapid Spin.
In Doubles, the ease of setting up Tailwind makes it easier to activate Brambleghast's Wind Rider Ability. As a result, it's one of the few SubSeeders that doesn't necessarily have to rely completely on residual damage from Leech Seed.
Brambleghast is a great choice for offensive lead in both balanced and offensive-oriented teams in Singles. In Doubles, it's best paired with a Pokemon that can set up Tailwind immediately to activate its Ability.
Offensive Lead | Physical Attacker | Offensive Pivot |
---|---|---|
Brambleghast | Kingambit | Wash Rotom |
Brambleghast's main role is to set up at least one layer of Spikes while also preventing Whirlwind users from phazing. KIngambit appreciates phazers taken out since it struggles breaking through both Hippowdon and Ting-Lu, who will otherwise wall and phaze it to remove its Swords Dance boosts.
Wash Rotom serves as this team's offensive pivot, providing Thunder Wave support and rounding off the team's coverage with its Electric and Water-type STAB.
Offensive Lead | Tailwind Setter |
---|---|
Brambleghast | Murkrow |
Special Attacker | Offensive Pivot |
Gholdengo | Salamence |
Murkrow is the best partner for Brambleghast since its Prankster-boosted Tailwind allows it to activate Wind Rider immediately, while also giving it a Speed boost.
Gholdengo is this team's Special Attacker and benefits from both Tailwind and the residual damage from Brambleghast's Leech Seed inflicts on opposing Pokemon.
Salamence is this team's backup Tailwind setter and also has Intimidate to make it easier for its teammates to switch in against physical attackers.
Although Brambleghast functions as an offensive lead, its low physical and special bulk means its easily taken out by any attacker that can shrug off its Grass and Ghost-type STAB.
