Summary

Pokeball IconIts four main moves are all effective and useful.

Ability and Held Item

Purifying Salt is Garganacl's best Ability which protects it from status conditions; a useful Ability for a defensive Pokemon to have.

Having Covert Cloak as its Held Item helps Garganacl win the mirror match against other Garganacl, as Covert Cloak can block Salt Cure's incremental damage.

Moves Breakdown

Salt Cure is Garganacl's main attacking move, which deals incremental damage to opposing Pokemon, with boosted damage dealt to Water and Steel-type Pokemon.

Recover allows Garganacl to heal back precious HP, allowing it to effectively outlast opponents.
Wide Guard is a powerful move which can protect Garganacl and its team from common spread moves like Earthquake and Make it Rain

Protect is good for turns where Garganacl is in danger of getting double targeted.

Best Tera Type

This build makes use of Tera Ghost to give it an immunity to Fighting-type Attacks, most notably Iron Hands' Drain Punch

EV Spread and Nature

252 HP with 60 Defense lets Garganacl take two 300 Base Power Rage Fists from Annihilape after Leftovers recovery. With this much bulk, Garganacl was sure to take anything else that wasn't boosted and super-effective. 196 is given to Special Defense to round out Garganacl's bulk, letting it take super-effective Special damage very well.

How to Use Garganacl Effectively

Iron Defense and Body Press for Massive Damage

Setting up multiple Iron Defenses can allow for Body Press to deal huge damage. This is great for neutral and super-effective hits, and for cleaning up late-game.

Use As A Late-Game Win Condition

When all your opponent's Special Attackers are disposed of, Garganacl can come in and be a powerhouse of a tank, shrugging off all physical damage, setting up, and going for knock outs. Alternatively, using Salt Cure and outlasting opponents is also a powerful strategy.

How to Build a Team with Garganacl

Pokemon who can handily dispose of Special Attackers (Notably Water-types and Grass-types) are great teammates for Garganacl.

Garganacl ideally wants to come in late-game after a teammate has been knocked out, so that it does not take any damage going into the field. However it is not a bad option to switch Garganacl into a Physical Move due to its impressive Physical bulk.

Water-types will find it difficult to deal damage on Gholdengo, while a Tera Fire Garchomp can make quick work of Grass-types.

Sample Singles Team

Physical Attacker Special Attacker Late-Game Tank
Garchomp ImageGarchomp Gholdengo ImageGholdengo Garganacl ImageGarganacl

Garchomp and Gholdengo are great for clearing out as many as your opponent's Pokemon as possible, leaving Garganacl with fewer obstacles to secure you a win.

Sample Doubles Team

Special Attacker Physical Attacker
Iron Bundle ImageIron Bundle Iron Hands ImageIron Hands
Win Con Support / Redirection
Garganacl ImageGarganacl Amoonguss ImageAmoonguss

Iron Bundle makes for a great partner for Iron Hands, being a very capable offensive front end for your team

Garganacl will serve as a consistent win condition after Iron Bundle and Iron Hands have done extensive damage to the opposing team.

Amoonguss can help Garganacl last even longer by redirecting attacks away from it with Rage Powder, and by putting opponents to sleep with Spore.

Counters for Garganacl

Use Special Attacks to shred Garganacl's HP. Even with lots of Special Defense investment, Garganacl still does not appreciate taking Special Attacks point blank. The Garganacl player's job is to knock out their opponent's Special Attackers, while the opposing player has to keep them alive to deal with Garganacl.

I find that Ghost Tera Type Garganacl with Purifying Salt and a Clear Amulet is a very difficult wall to break as once terastalized you are only weak to Dark, which at best are hitting with Dark Pulses or Crunch since 80 is pretty much the best power you can get out of a Dark Move this gen. But since you get Body Press and Hammer Arm for Fighting coverage, you will easily take out any Dark Types tha come your way.
