Ability and Held Item

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Registeel Image
Ability Held Item
Clear Body Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Leftovers ImageLeftovers

The Ability chosen for this build is Clear Body. While it is unlikely that Registeel's defenses will get lowered, it should still be used over Light Metal so that it isn't susceptible to moves like Heat Crash and Low Kick, and so that Heavy Slam's damage isn't lowered.

The item chosen for this build are Leftovers. This lets Registeel passively regain health at the end of every turn, making it even more difficult to knock out. Alternatively, it could use a Chesto Berry instead so that it can immediately wake up after using Rest.

Moves Breakdown

Body Press Heavy Slam
Rest Iron Defense

Body Press is the key move for this build since its damage gets heavily boosted by Registeels amazing base Defense and Iron Defense.

Heavy Slam is its best Steel-type STAB move that is used to deal with Ghost-types that are immune to Body Press.

Rest is used to restore Registeel back to full health, allowing it to get more damage off with Body Press once it wakes up.

Iron Defense is the other key move for this build since it boosts the damage of Body Press and makes Registeel ridiculously tanky.

Flying is the best Tera Type for this build because it removes all of Registeel's weaknesses. Also, Registeel's Steel-typing can comfortably tank Flying's weaknesses.

Best Flying (Tera) Type Pokemon for Ranked Battle

EV Spread and Nature

A full 252 EVs are placed in Registeel's HP and Sp. Def to make it as specially bulk as possible since Iron Defense boosts its Defense. The extra 4 EVs are put into its Defense to help round out its bulk.

A Careful nature is preferred to maximize Registeel's special bulk.

Other Viable Moves

Amnesia Used over Heavy Slam so that Registeel can also boost its Sp. Def.
Earthquake Helps it deal with Pokemon, like Gholdengo and Basculegion, who can comfortably tank its other two moves.

Heavy Slam is its best Steel-type STAB move that is used to deal with Ghost-types that are immune to Body Press.

Protect can protect Registeel on turns where it is in danger of getting double-targeted. This move is also especially useful on a Pokemon as tanky as Registeel, oftentimes denying opponents of a knock out.

Iron Defense is the other key move for this build since it boosts the damage of Body Press and makes Registeel ridiculously tanky.

How to Use Registeel Effectively

Registeel Needs to Set Up to Become Effective in Battle

Registeel has amazing natural bulk but doesn't have great offensive stats. For Registeel to become effective in battle, it will need time to set up Iron Defense and Amnesia boosts to minimize the damage it takes and increasing the damage Body Press will do.

How to Build a Team with Registeel

Registeel appreciates allies that can support it so that it can safely set up and become impossible to remove from battle.

Sample Singles Team

Screens Setter Wall Physical Attacker
Alolan Ninetales ImageAlolan Ninetales Registeel ImageRegisteel Dragonite ImageDragonite

Alolan Ninetales is used to set up screens so that Pokemon like Registeel and Dragonite have a safer time boosting their stats. This is mainly used for Registeel since Dragonite has Multiscale to get a free Dragon Dance boost off.

Once Aurora Veil is set up, Registeel can come in and get Iron Defense boosts off to make it very tanky and get knockouts with boosted Body Presses.

Dragonite is the final Pokemon on this team thanks to the combination of Multiscale and Roost making it nearly impossible to deal with, and Normal Tera Extreme Speeds to finish off the enemy's team.

Sample Doubles Team

Support / Physical Attacker Special Attacker
Incineroar ImageIncineroar Landorus (Incarnate Forme) ImageLandorus (Incarnate Forme)
Physical Attacker Tank
Ogerpon (Wellspring Mask) ImageOgerpon (Wellspring Mask) Registeel ImageRegisteel

Incineroar can support Landorus-I with Fake Out, and allow it to set up a Substitute. It can also use Parting Shot to reduce the effectiveness of opposing attackers, making way for an unbreakable Registeel endgame.

Registeel can come in late into a game when opponents have run out of ways to hit it for super-effective. Ogerpon Wellspring can support Registeel with redirection, or threaten KOs on Ground and Fire-types who threaten Registeel.
