Chinese Journey of Dreams Animated Short

Pokemon Shanghai has recently released a new animated short called Journey of Dreams. Read on for the Release Date, Implications for GBC and GBA coming to Virtual Console, Pokemon Sleep connections and more!

As seen on the poster, the main character, Xiaojun, is holding a Gameboy in his hand, and on the ground are the other Nintendo handhelds that succeeded it. Behind him are different scenes from various Generations of Pokemon. As shown we have:

1. Viridian Forest from Kanto
2. Whirl Islands from Johto
3. The Hoenn Region
4. Spear Pillar from Sinnoh/Hisui
5. N's Castle From Unova
6. The Crater left by the Ultimate Weapon in Geosenge Town from Kalos
7. The Rock Fromations from the Ultra Wormholes found in Alola

Pokemon Journey of Dreams Synopsis

The Beginning of a Journey

The short focuses on Xiaojun, a kid who lives in a colorless world with his workaholic of a father called Daming.

At the beginning of the short, Xiaojun finds his father's old Pokemon Games, he boots up Pokemon Red, and he finds himself sucked into the Kanto Region and meets his father, Daming, but as a kid the same age as he is. After a bit of an adventure involving a Charizard, he snaps back to reality and proceeds to boot up the next game in succession.

Through the Eyes of Another

Playing through each Generation of games, he comes to understand his father better through the eyes of the adventures his father took throughout his life. After booting up Pokemon Ultra Moon however, he finds himself stuck in an Ultra Wormhole with no way to move.

His father after noticing the silence, walks out of his table and notices Xiaojun had seemed to have gotten into the games and follows suit. Xiaojun is then rescued by his father at the back of Necrozma and leads them to an Ultra Wormhole containing Mewtwo.

VS Mewtwo

With a seemingly montrous task of defeating Mewto it was up to Daming to save his child and get out of there. The fight was tough and a Confusion from a Psyduck could not even scratch the Legendary Mewtwo. When all hope is lost, Xiaojun remembers the trick his dad used in his old adventures. With a plan in mind, they set into motion a pincer attack where Daming and Pikachu will distract Mewtwo while Xiaojun and Mega Charizard X will wind up a strong attack. They execute their plan and try to catch Mewtwo in the ball.

Ending

With the Mewtwo still stuck in the Pokeball, Daming and Xiaojun ride on Lunala's back, and ride off escaping nearly as Mewtwo bursts out of the Pokeball. They soon find themselves back in the real world with a new found understanding of each other, which brings color into their world. The story concludes with Daming and Xiaojun taking on the Galarian Star Tournament with Daming and his Charizard and Xiaojun managing to catch the aforementioned Mewtwo.

The announcement and poster was originally shared by Pokemon Shanghai's official Weibo Account on February 23, 2023. It was released on February 28, 2023.

Possible Connections to Pokemon Sleep

Pokemon Sleep has been announced for Smartphones during the February 27 Pokemon Presents. However, this short had nothing to do with the long awaited app. Check out below what was included in the Pokemon Presents!

Pokemon GBC and GBA Virtual Console Hints

The Poster may be a clue on how the Nintendo Switch Online's recently announced Gameboy and Gameboy Advance compatibility may have the Pokemon titles starting from Pokemon Red and Blue up until Emerald be available to subscribers. And since Pokemon Stadium is also available for Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers, this may be a way to bring in Pokemon in those games too.

As this short was be released the day after Pokemon Day, and while the Nintendo Switch Online did not get the Previous Game Boy and Game Boy Advance titles, it was a nice nostalgia trip nevertheless!
