Lunala's only ability is Shadow Shield. This is amazing because, like Multiscale, it reduces the damage Lunala takes at full HP by half. When combined with its amazing bulk and Moonlight's healing, Lunala becomes incredibly difficult to knock out.
The item chosen for this build is a Covert Cloak. This is important so that Lunala doesn't get affected by a move's secondary effect, especially Psychic Noise which prevents it from healing itself with Moonlight.
| Moongeist Beam | Moonblast |
| Moonlight | Calm Mind |
Moongeist Beam is its strongest Ghost-type STAB move that also ignores the opponent's ability, potentially getting an OHKO on Pokemon that have Sturdy or Multiscale.
Moonblast is its main coverage move that, when combined with Moongeist Beam, only the Pyroar and Grafaiai lines are able to resist both moves. It also has its damage boosted once Lunala Terastallizes.
Moonlight lets Lunala recover a portion of its max HP, with the amount depending on the current weather conditions. This is important to bring Lunala back to full health and resetting Shadow Shield.
Calm Mind is the key move of this build because it lets Lunala boost its Sp. Atk and Sp. Def stats, making it an incredibly bulky threat.

| Damaged Normally By: |

Fairy is the best Tera Type for this build because it is one of the best defensive types in the game, and it also boosts the damage of Lunala's Moonblast.
Best Fairy (Tera) Type Pokemon for Ranked Battle
A full 252 EVs are placed in Lunala's HP and Defense to make it as physically bulky as possible. The extra 4 EVs are put into its Sp. Atk to slightly boost its damage output.
A Bold nature is preferred to maximize Lunala's lower physical defenses.
| Psyshock | Its best Psychic-type STAB move since it hits the opponent's Defense instead of their Sp. Def. |
|---|---|
| Will-O-Wisp | Punishes physical attackers by burning them and halving their Attack stat. |
| Item: Cornerstone Mask | +2 Moongeist Beam 153 ~ 181 (98 ~ 116%) 93.8% chance to OHKO |
| Item: Assault Vest | +2 Moonblast 135 ~ 159 (61.3 ~ 72.2%) Guaranteed 2HKO |
| Item: Light Ball | +1 Ivy Cudgel 75 ~ 89 (30.7 ~ 36.4%) 60.6% Chance to 3HKO |

Lunala's only ability is Shadow Shield. This is amazing because, like Multiscale, it reduces the damage Lunala takes at full HP by half.
Power Herb allows it to fully charge a Meteor Beam in a single turn, making use of its Special Attack buff without the delay.
| Moongeist Beam | Meteor Beam |
| Wide Guard | Dazzling Gleam |
Moongeist Beam is its strongest Ghost-type STAB move that also ignores the opponent's ability, potentially getting an OHKO on Pokemon that have Sturdy or Multiscale.
Meteor Beam positions Lunala for a sweep after one successful use. This can also deal meaningful chunks of damage to opposing Incineroar.
Wide Guard protects Lunala and its team from popular spread attacks like, Glacial Lance, Astral Barrage, Dazzling Gleam, Water Spout, and Precipice Blades.
Dazzling Gleam gives Lunala its own spread option, with Fairy being a good offensive type with only a few types having a resistance to it.

Fairy is the best Tera Type for this build because it is one of the best defensive types in the game, and it also boosts the damage of Lunala's Dazzling Gleam.

Unless the Calm Mind Lunala set is holding a Mental Herb, it easily gets shut down by a Pokemon that knows Taunt. With no EV investments in its Sp. Atk, Lunala becomes an okay physical wall that does decent damage until Taunt wears off.
Use Lunala's allies to knock these Pokemon out or switch Lunala out so that it's not sitting in the field doing nothing while Taunted.
One of the more annoying Pokemon to deal with this generation is Dragonite thanks to Roost constantly resetting Multiscale. Lunala also has this combination but with Moonlight and Shadow Shield.
Look to make Lunala an unbreakable wall with Calm Mind boosts raising its Sp. Def and Moonlight consistently heal it back to full and reactivating Shadow Shield.
Lunala works better on more balanced teams that prefer to use their bulk to outlast their opponents.
| Hazards Lead | Special Attacker | Special Attacker |
|---|---|---|
Glimmora
|
Terapagos
|
Lunala
|
Glimmora is a great lead thanks to its ability to set up Stealth Rocks and Toxic Spikes. Its main role is to set up two layers of Toxic Spikes and badly poison the opponent, setting a timer on how long they can stay alive in battle.
Terapagos can utilize its Tera Shell and increased bulk in its Stellar form to easily tank hits and deal massive damage in return. It also has the option to set up with Calm Mind boosts against more passive opponents.
Finally, Lunala is used as the anchor of the team since it can reduce the damage it takes with Shadow Shield and also heal itself with Moonlight. This combo makes it nearly impossible to knock out, and the opponent will faint from being poisoned before Lunala goes down.
