A Status Move is any move that does not deal damage and instead causes different battle effects, such as increasing or lowering stats, inflicting status conditions, or chanding the weather to name a few.
Status Moves often don't take into consideration their type's effectiveness when affecting a Pokemon, but do take status effects into consideration.
For example, you can paralyze a Ghost-type Pokemon with the move Glare even if it's a Normal-type move that Ghost-types are immune to.
Conversely, it's not possible to paralyze an Electric-type Pokemon with the same move due to the type's immunity to Paralysis.
