Competitive Analysis

Guard Split takes the user and the target's Defense and Special Defense stat separately and changes it to the calculated average value of the two stats.

This move can be used in two ways: improve an ally's defensive stats by letting a Pokemon that has high Defense and Special Defense use Guard Split, or using the move on an opposing Pokemon with high defensive stats to effectively bring it down.

Example With Shuckle

Shuckle has 230 base Defense and Special Defense, which sets it as a good example of clarifying how Guard Split works.

Assume you have Shuckle and another Pokemon with low stats on your side of the field. If Shuckle uses Guard Split on its ally, the move will calculate the average of Shuckle and the other Pokemon's Defense and Special Defense, thereby drastically increasing its ally's Defense and Special Defense stat thanks to Shuckle's towering base stats.

As for the other option of using this move, let's say you are facing an opposing Shuckle. Using Guard Split will apply the respective calculations, which will lower Shuckle's Defense and Special Defense and make it more vulnerable.
