Fire-type Moves in Competitive Play

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Pyro Ball Feature.png
Fire-type Moves are very common coverage moves used by both physical and special attackers to get around resistances or provide neutral coverage.

The fact that they deal super effective damage against 4 very common types in the metagame means they're often used as filler moves by Pokemon that can learn them.

Fire-type Moves and Synergy

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Fire-type Synergy.png
Fire-type moves synergize well with other attacking types and were historically paired with both Dragon and Fighting-type moves for their great type synergy.

Fire-type moves are best paired with Electric-type moves as the two cover each other's shortcomings. Heat Rotom is the only Pokemon that gets STAB for this type combination, but other Fire-types often carry an Electric-type move to imrpove their coverage if they can learn them.

Fire-type Moves and Burn

Burned Status Condition.png

Many offensive Fire-type moves have a chance to inflict the Burn status effect, while the move Will-O-Wisp guarantees a burn if its hits.

The Burn status effect is one of the more powerful conditions since it also halves the Attack of the inflicted Pokemon. This gives Fire-types moves in general increased utility against physical attackers.

Fire-type Max Moves

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Max Flare.png
With the introduction of Dynamax and Max Moves, Fire-type Moves have seen increased in usage due to becoming Max Flare in Dynamax.

This Max Move has the secondary effect of setting up harsh sunlight on the battlefield, replicating the effects of Sunny Day and the Ability Drought.

This Max Move sees a lot of usage in Sun-based Weather Teams as the main Dynamax Pokemon essentially functions a secondary Sun setter.
