Fairy-type Moves in Competitive Play

Fairy-type moves enjoy high usage in competitive play as it deals super effective damage to three of the most common types in the metagame with many of the attacking moves having high base power or unique secondary effects.

Fairy-type Coverage

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Dazzling Gleam.png
Fairy-type moves are often used by non-Fairy-type Pokemon as coverage moves; most Psychic-type Pokemon can learn Dazzling Gleam while some Normal-type Pokemon can learn Play Rough, and both use these to even the odds against Dark and Fighting-types that they are weak to respectively.

Fairy-type Moves are Mostly Special Attacks

What limits Fairy-type moves is that most are special attacks, with only the aformentioned Play Rough and Spirit Break being the physical options.

This means Fairy-type Pokemon with a higher Attack stat, such as Tapu Koko, often have to rely on their lower Special Attack to make sure of their Fairy-type STAB.

Fairy-type Max Moves

With the introduction of Dynamax and Max Moves, Fairy-type Moves now become Max Starfall in Dynamax.

This Max Move has the secondary effect of setting up Misty Terrain in the battlefield, similar to the aformentioned move and the Ability Misty Surge.

While the terrain effect itself isn't quite common, Max Starfall is often used in defensive teams to overwrite the opposing team's terrain or to prevent *status effects.
