Competitive Analysis

Wide Guard is a common defensive move in Doubles, as it protects the user and its ally on the field from multi-target moves.

Multi-Target Protection

The way Wide Guard works is that it protects your team from multi-target moves. That includes regular multi-target moves like Water Spout or Blizzard and moves that would otherwise hit every other Pokemon in the field like Surf or Earthquake.

This is useful as you can use most Rock-type Pokemon along with your own Surf users and it will be protected from the move as long as Wide Guard is used.

Wide Guard also has +3 priority and will be used before other moves with lower priority.

Can Be Used Consecutively

Wide Guard, like Quick Guard, can be used consecutively without fail.

However, using Protect or Detect will have a decreased chance of success when Wide Guard was used in the previous turn.

Using Wide Guard consecutively will also make you very predictable as your opponent can simply use a single target move, so use this sparingly if possible!

Watch Out for Certain Moves

Moves like Shadow Force or Phantom Force can hit Pokemon even if they are protected on that turn.
