Steel-type Moves in Competitive Play

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Iron Head Feature.png
Historically, Steel-type moves saw little use in competitive play as it was only super effective against Rock and Ice-type Pokemon, which Fighting-type Moves already covered. It's also resisted by many common types in the metagame.

With the introduction of Fairy-type Pokemon in Generation VI, Steel-type Moves saw increased utility as coverage moves for Pokemon with newfound weakness to the type.

Nowadays, it's not uncommon for Dragon, Fighting, and Dark-type Pokemon to carry a Steel-type coverage move to deal with Fairy-types.

Steel-type Utility Moves

In competitive play, Steel-type moves are generally used for their utility or as support moves rather than outright power.

Many Steel-type Moves have varied secondary effects or have unique mechanics. These include the newly introduced Steel Roller, which removes terrain from the battlefield.

Steel-type Max Moves

Damaging Steel-type Moves become Max Steelspike during Dynamax and has the secondary effect of increasing the user and it's ally's Defense by 1 Stage.

While it's an uncommon Dynamax Move, it has some use in both defensive and offensive teams. Offensive teams with frail sweepers appreciate the Defense boost, potentially letting them withstand a strong hit and staying longer in the battlefield.
