Casual Battles are 3-versus-3 Pokemon battles with other players online. Both Single and Double Battles are available.
Casual Battle does not use any kind of ranking system, so this mode is better for casual players, or players wanting to try out a new team without it affecting their standing in Ranked Battle.
Ranked Battles are a competitive online platform for battling with players online. Ranked Battles are 3-versus-3 Pokemon for Single Battles and 4-versus-4 Pokemon for Double Battles.
Ranked Battles feature a player ranking system in which you gain or lose points depending on whether you win or you lose. When you reach a certain amount of points, your rank will be raised, and if you lose a certain amount of points, your rank will be lowered.
In Pokemon Sword and Shield you can join or host online competitions. Online competitions are tournament like format in competing with other trainers around the globe.
Official competions are announced on the official site of Pokemon Sword and Shield, so be sure to keep a close eye to make sure you don't miss any upcoming competitions. You can also host your own online competitions to share with friends or players around the globe.
