Bug-type Moves in Competitive Play

Heracross.png

Bug-type moves are generally uncommon in competitive play, with only Bug-types generally employing the moves for STAB.

This is due to most Psychic and Grass-type Pokemon having a secondary typing that nullifies their Bug Weakness, and Fighting-type Moves offering better coverage for Dark-type Pokemon.

Bug-type Utility Moves

U-Turn.png
What Bug-type Moves lack in coverage they make up for utility. Most have unique secondary effects, such as trapping, lowering the opponent's stats, and even healing.

U-Turn is arguably the most commonly used Bug-type move and is a staple in offensive teams thanks to its secondary effect of switching the user after dealing damage.

Bug-type Support Moves

Quiver Dance.png
Bug-type support moves often finds use in both defensive and offensive teams. Sticky Web, for example, is a move that sets a unique entry hazard that lowers the opposing team's Speed by 1 stage.

Other support moves include Quiver Dance, which is widely considered the best stat-boosting move for Special attackers, and Rage Powder - an alternative to Follow Me in Doubles.

Bug-type Dynamax Moves

Gigantamax Butterfree G-Max Befuddle.png
With the introduction of Dynamax and Max Moves, Bug-type Moves have increased in usage due to becoming Max Flutterby in Dynamax.

This Max Move has the secondary effect of lowering the opponent's Special Attack by one stage, which gives it a niche in offensive teams.

Gigantamax Butterfree, on the other hand has access to G-Max Befuddle, which has the effect of causing either poison, paralysis, or sleep on all opponents which sometimes sees usage in more defensive-oriented teams.
