Competitive Analysis

Hypnosis is mainly used by utility Pokemon as a means to make its target fall asleep.

Take note that Hypnosis will not work if Electric Terrain or Misty Terrain is present in the field.

Hypnosis and Other Sleep-Inducing Moves

Hypnosis is guaranteed to make its target fall asleep on the turn it is used if the move lands. Unfortunately, Hypnosis suffers from having low accuracy.

Spore would be a great alternative but the move can only be learned by a few Grass-type Pokemon.

If accuracy is a concern, you can use Yawn. It will not make the target fall asleep on the same turn the move is used, but it is a great way of pressuring a Pokemon to be switched out.

Hypnosis vs Yawn

One critical thing to keep in mind when choosing between Hypnosis and Yawn is the types that the move will have no effect on.

Hypnosis will not work on Dark-type Pokemon, while Yawn will not work on Ghost-type Pokemon.
