Ice-type Moves in Competitive Play

Ice Type Pokemon.png
Ice-type moves provide good counters for prevalent types such as Ground and Dragon types.

While Ice-type teams offer a niche in most competitive teams, moves such as Aurora Veil provide great support by reducing damage by physical and special moves for five turns.

Ice-type Moves and Synergy

Ice Beam.png
Ice and Electric-type attacks provide good neutral coverage with each complementing each other's weaknesses.

Moves such as Ice Beam and Thunderbolt are a staple combination for special sweepers that can learn them, while Ice Punch and Thunder Punch offers the same combo for physical attackers.

Ice-type Utility Moves

Frozen Status Condition.png
Most Ice-type moves have good secondary effects that mostly deal with freezing the target, with staples such as Ice Beam having a chance to freeze the target, to Haze which can eliminate stat changes across the field.

Ice-type Dynamax Moves

With the introduction of Dynamax and Max Moves, Ice-type moves become Max Hail which has the secondary effect of creating Hail for five turns.

Gigantamax Lapras on the other hand has access to G-Max Resonance, which has the secondary effect of setting up Aurora Veil for five turns which can further increase defense on Ice teams.
