Ghost-type Moves in Competitive Play

Ghost Types.png
Ghost-type moves enjoy general usage in competitive battles as many staple or meta Pokemon are Ghost-type Pokemon or are weak to the attacking move.

Many non-Ghost Pokemon also use them as filler moves due to their secondary effects, which often inflict status conditions such as the moves Curse and Confuse Ray.

Ghost-type Utility Moves

Most Ghost-type moves are used for their general utility and often employ unique mechanics. Good examples include Phantom Force and Shadow Force - both of which bypass protection moves.

Another example is the move Hex, which doubles in power when used against a Pokemon with a status condition and is often used by and against stall teams.

Ghost-type Dynamax Moves

Gengar G-Max Terror.png
With the introduction of Dynamax and Max Moves, Ghost-type Moves become Max Phantasm which has the secondary effect of lowering the opponent's Defense by one stage, offering a niche in offensive teams.

Gigantamax Gengar on the other hand has access to G-Max Terror, which has the effect of preventing the target from escaping or switching out, which sees usage in offensive teams.
