Fighting-type moves in competitive Pokemon are often used to combat the defensive types. Being super effective against Dark, Steel, and Rock has made the Fighting-type a staple in any meta.
Many non-Fighting Pokemon also use Fighting-type moves as coverage especially for stall teams that usually feature a Dark or Steel-type Pokemon.
As the name suggests, most Fighting-type moves are strictly used offensively. With an array of choices such as Focus Punch, Close Combat, Brick Break, etc., Fighting-types have terrorized the past and current meta with strong sweepers such as Lucario, Blaziken, Mienshao, Urshifu and others.

With the introduction of Dynamax, Fighting-type moves got an extra boost in terms of utility with Max Knuckle. This move boosts your Pokemon's attack stat in addition to dealing damage.
A lot of non-Fighting Pokemon were already running Close Combat or Super Power as their filler move. This made Max Knuckle arguably the strongest and most prevalent Max move next to Max Airstream.
