Competitive Analysis

Trick Room is an excellent way of letting slow but heavy-hitting Pokemon take the center stage.

Setting Up Trick Room

Using Trick Room may be simple at first as you only really need a single turn to get everything going, but there can be a lot of hindrances to look out for.

Trick Room has -7 priority, which means that your Trick Room setter will move last in that turn.

It is essential to try and keep your Trick Room setter alive. You can do this by letting it have high defensive stats through its EVs and IVs or with items like Eviolite, or you may use redirection moves in Doubles. You can also consider having a backup Trick Room setter in your team.

Threats to Trick Room Setters

The greatest threats a Trick Room setter can face are flinching from Fake Out, getting Taunted and being unable to use status moves, and of course getting knocked out before you can even use the Trick Room which would be catastrophic if your entire team is built around the strategy.

Another problem that you may encounter is facing another Trick Room setter, as using Trick Room while it is already up will cancel its effects and the field will return to normal.

Trick Room Team Composition

Trick Room attackers are built to have 0 EVs and IVs on their Speed stat so that they can be as slow as possible. These Pokemon need to dish out damage immediately as soon as Trick Room is up as they only have four turns of Trick Room to utilize.

As for Trick Room setters, they are usually equipped with moves that can support the main attacker of the team.

Countering Trick Room

Like previously mentioned, Taunt and focusing all attacks on the Trick Room setter is an effective way of countering Trick Room strategies.

Players can also simply stall and wait for four turns until Trick Room is up. The easiest way to do this is by using Protect and the like.
