Poison-type Moves in Competitive Play

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Sludge Wave Feature.png
Historically, Poison-type coverage moves saw little use in competitive play as it was only super effective to Grass-type Pokemon which many at the time had a secondary Poison-typing themselves.

With the introduction of Fairy-type Pokemon in Generation VI, Poison-type Moves saw increased utility as coverage moves for Pokemon with a newfound weakness to the type.

Nowadays, it's not uncommon for Dragon, Fighting, and Dark-type Pokemon to carry a Poison-type coverage move to deal with Fairy-types.

Poison-type Utility Moves

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Toxic Feature.png
In competitive play, Poison-type moves are generally used for their utility rather than outright power.

Toxic, for example, remains an important status move that almost all Defensive Poison-types and some non Poison-type Pokemon should have in their moveset.

Poison Inflicting Moves

Most damaging Poison-types moves are capable of inflicting the Poisoned Status Effect, with some boasting a higher chance to inflict it as a secondary effect.

Even if the user fails to knock out an opponent with its Poison-type move, it has a chance to debilitate it for the rest of the match with the Poison Status Effect.

Poison-type Max Moves

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Max Ooze Feature.png
With the introduction of Dynamax and Max Moves, Poison-type Moves have increased in usage due to becoming Max Ooze in Dynamax.

This Max Move has the secondary effect of increasing the user and it's ally's Special Attack by 1 Stage, making it invaluable for offensive-oriented teams with special sweepers.

Though not as ubiquitous as Max Airstream, the move gives Poison-types increased utility - especially in the Doubles Battle Format where it's partner can also benefit from the Special Attack Boost.
