Electric-type Moves in Competitive Play

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Electric-type Moves in Competitive Play

Electric-type moves are utilized in various ways. Most hyper-offensive Pokemon have an Electric-type move in their arsenal, while some support Pokemon run with status Electric-type moves.

Utilities and Speed Control

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Thunder Wave

In the name of speed control, Electric-type moves are royalty.

Getting paralyzed halves a Pokemon's Speed, and most household Electric-type moves have a chance to inflict paralysis.

Additionally, most Electric-type Pokemon already have high Speed stats, which makes them the fastest moving Pokemon in a regular match.

It is also not uncommon to see support Pokemon with Thunder Wave or summoning Electric Terrain in one way or another to further boost the power of Electric-type moves.

Volt Switch is also a favored move in the metagame, used by Pokemon built as pivots, or for some attackers, a useful way of switching out and avoiding trouble.

Electric and Ice-type Synergy

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Frost Rotom Electric/Ice

When paired together, Electric and Ice-type moves work well as both types are able to hit all eighteen types without resistances, meaning you can hit those pesky Ground-types with Ice-type moves!

Electric-type Dynamax Moves

Pokemon Sword and Shield - G-Max Volt Crash

Max Lightning, when used in battles, summons Electric Terrain in the field for five turns. This is particularly useful when facing Pokemon that are known to use Hypnosis, Spore, and the like as Electric Terrain prevents any Pokemon from falling asleep.

As added bonus, Electric Terrain also powers up succeeding usages of Max Lightning!

It is also worth mentioning Gigantamax Pikachu's G-Max Volt Crash, which paralyzes all opposing Pokemon in the field, and Gigantamax Toxtricity's G-Max Stun Shock which can either cause paralysis or poison.
