List of Trapping Moves - Pokemon Sword and Shield

This is a list of trapping moves in Pokemon Sword and Shield, Isle of Armor, and the Crown Tundra DLC. Read on to learn more about these moves, their interaction with abilities, items, and their effects in battle.

Moves that Partially Traps

Moves Type Effect
Bind Pokemon Normal Image Things such as long bodies or tentacles are used to bind and squeeze the target for four to five turns.
Fire Spin Pokemon Fire Image The target becomes trapped within a fierce vortex of fire that rages for four to five turns.
G-Max Centiferno Pokemon Fire Image A Fire-type attack that Gigantamax Centiskorch use. This move traps opponents in flames for four to five turns.
G-Max Sandblast Pokemon Ground Image A Ground-type attack that Gigantamax Sandaconda use. Opponents are trapped in a raging sandstorm for four to five turns.
Infestation Pokemon Bug Image The target is infested and attacked for four to five turns. The target can't flee during this time.
Magma Storm Pokemon Fire Image The target becomes trapped within a maelstrom of fire that rages for four to five turns.
Sand Tomb Pokemon Ground Image The user traps the target inside a harshly raging sandstorm for four to five turns.
Snap Trap Pokemon Grass Image The user snares the target in a snap trap for four to five turns.
Thunder Cage Pokemon Electric Image Deals damage, then traps opponents within an electrified cage, causing damage every turn for four to five turns and preventing them from fleeing or being swapped out.
Whirlpool Pokemon Water Image The use traps the target in a violent swirling whirlpool for four to five turns.
Wrap Pokemon Normal Image A long body, vines, or the like wraps and squeezes the target for 4-5 turns.

Moves that Permanently Traps

Moves Type Effect
Anchor Shot Pokemon Steel Image The user entangles the target with its anchor chain while attacking. The target becomes unable to flee.
Block Pokemon Normal Image The user blocks the target's way with arms spread wide to prevent escape.
Fairy Lock Pokemon Fairy Image By locking down the battlefield, the user keeps all Pokemon from fleeing during the next turn
G-Max Terror Pokemon Ghost Image A Ghost-type attack that Gigantamax Gengar use. This Pokémon steps on the opposing Pokémon's shadow to prevent them from escaping.
Ingrain Pokemon Grass Image The user lays roots that restore its HP on every turn. Because it's rooted, it can't swich out.
Jaw Lock Pokemon Dark Image This move prevents the user and the target from switching out until either of them faints. The effect goes away if either of the Pokémon leaves the field.
Mean Look Pokemon Normal Image The use pins the target with a dark, arresting look. The target becomes unable to flee.
No Retreat Pokemon Fighting Image This move raises all the user's stats but prevents the user from switching out or fleeing.
Octolock Pokemon Fighting Image The user locks the target in and prevents it from fleeing. This move also lowers the target's Defense and Sp. Def every turn.
Spirit Shackle Pokemon Ghost Image The user attacks while simultaneously stitching the target's shadow to the ground to prevent the target from escaping.
Thousand Waves Pokemon Ground Image The user attacks with a wave that crawls along the ground. Those hit can't flee from battles.

What are Trapping Moves

Sand Tomb

Trapping moves are moves that prevent switching and are classified into two types - Partially Trapping and Permanently Trapping Moves.

Move that partially traps a Pokemon prevents switching for two to five turns. Moves that permanently traps a Pokemon prevent it from swithcing until it faints or uses a move that switches it out.

Items that Extend Moves that Partially Traps

Item Effect
Grip Claw ImageGrip Claw An item to be held by a Pokemon. It extends the duration of multi-turn attacks like Bind and Wrap.

Abilities with Similar Effects

Ability Description
Arena Trap Prevents the foe from fleeing.
Magnet Pull Prevents Steel-type Pokemon from escaping.
Shadow Tag Prevents the foe from escaping.

Counters to Trapping Moves

U-Turn

Ghost-types

Ghost-type Pokemon are immune to being trapped by any trapping Ability or Item. They however, are not immune to the damage of said moves.

Switching Moves

Moves that switch out a user or a target will still get them out of the battle. These include moves such as U-Turn, Volt Switch, and Parting Shot to name a few.

Run Away Ability

Pokemon that have the Run Away Ability are immune to the effects of trapping moves and will always successfully switch out or flee from the battle.

Smoke Ball ImageSmoke Ball An item to be held by a Pokemon. It enables the holder to flee from any wild Pokemon encounter without fail.
Shed Shell ImageShed Shell An item to be held by a Pokemon. This discarded carapace enables the holder to switch out of battle without fail.
