Dark-type moves are used infrequently as coverage moves due to the increase in Fairy-type Pokemon, but still retains a small niche in dealing with the relatively common Ghost-type Pokemon in the current metagame.

Dark-type Utility Moves

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Knock Off.png
Dark-type moves remain popular utility moves due to their unique secondary effects, such as lowering the opposing stats, increased critical hits, or preventing certain moves from being used.

Knock Off is one of the most widely used Dark-type moves in competitive play and enjoys usage outside of Dark-type Pokemon. It's often used by physical attackers to deal with defensive Pokemon as it removes the target's held item for the duration of the battle.

Dark-type Max Moves

With the introduction of Dynamax and Max Moves, Dark-type Moves have seen increased in usage due to becoming Max Darkness in Dynamax.

This Max Move has the secondary effect of lowering the opponent and it's ally's Special Defense by 1 Stage.

This Max Move has a small niche in special-oritend offensive teams as it can help ensure teammates net KOs with their unboosted moves.
