This is a guide for the intensely difficult Max Raid Mewtwo Battle available for a limited time. For those who want to defeat Mewtwo and get the rare Item Drops for winning, check this guide designed by our victorious team.
List of Contents
Max Raid Mewtwo exists in three forms, with a Physical build and two Special builds. Because the strategies vary between the builds, it's a good idea to challenge Mewtwo once expecting to lose the fight, in order to understand which of the builds you will be up against.
As you can fight the same Mewtwo again at the same Den after losing, there's no risk that you will encounter a different build next time you face it.

How to Use the Team | |||
|
Essential Moves | Spectral Thief |
---|---|
Held Item | Choice Band |
Marshadow's basic strategy is to use Spectral Thief to steal Mewtwo's stat boosts. As it doesn't have much need for other moves, it can use Choice Band to power up the damage of Spectral Thief.
How to Get Marshadow
Essential Moves | Taunt Light Screen Reflect Foul Play |
---|---|
Ability | Prankster |
Item | Light Clay |
After Mewtwo's shields have been broken, it can use Taunt to prevent Mewtwo from powering up. Be sure to communicate with your teammates and decide the roles of each Pokemon when using this build.
Keep in mind that Mewtwo is immune to Taunt and other status moves while its shields are active. Moves used on your own Pokemon, such as Light Screen, can be used while the shields are still up.
How to Get Grimmsnarl
Essential Moves | Moongeist Beam Shadow Ball |
---|---|
Item | Assault Vest |
If you're able to communicate with your teammates, you can also use Light Screen or Reflect, depending on the Mewtwo build, with Light Clay as a held item instead. When playing with random players, it's advised to use Assault Vest and push Lunala as an attacker. However, this will limit its effectiveness as a support player, so be sure to clearly define its role.
Because Moongeist Beam has only 5 PP, be sure to use PP Up or PP Max to boost its PP before the battle, or it will run out quickly before the end of the fight.
How to Get Lunala
Essential Moves | Moongeist Beam Dark Pulse |
---|---|
Item | Assault Vest |
If you happen to have it, Dawn Wings Necrozma is far more effective than Lunala. However, its disadvantage is that it can't learn the STAB move Shadow Ball.
As with Lunala, because Moongeist Beam has only 5 PP, be sure to use PP Up or PP Max to boost its PP before the battle.

※ Keep in mind that Taunt cannot be used while Mewtwo's shields are up.
Mewtwo uses moves to power itself up and make itself even more deadly, such as Nasty Plot, Calm Mind and Bulk Up. After taking down Mewtwo's shields, Taunt can be used to prevent it from using these moves for 3 turns.
For the Special Build of Mewtwo, Grimmsnarl's Spirit Break has the lynchpin effect of lowering its Special Attack, potentially allowing your teammates to survive its attacks. Unfortunately, its effect won't kick in until Mewtwo's shields are down.
Because Moongeist Beam has only 5 PP, be sure to use PP Up or PP Max to boost its PP before the battle, or it will run out quickly before the end of the fight.
Our team is hard at work right now making the best strategy to defeat this build.
It's no exaggeration to say that the Max Raid Mewtwo appearing to celebrate Pokemon Day is one of the toughest opponents in the series history. It's essentially impossible to beat on your own with random players or NPCs, so it's best to communicate with others to work out a strategy when attempting to take it on.

All Mewtwo builds are Level 100 with the Ability Pressure. Be sure to bring EV-trained Level 100 Pokemon when facing it, and increase the PP of your moves before the battle to deal with the effects of Pressure.

At this point, the players who have managed to beat Mewtwo are few and far between, but a few powerful players have managed to pull together groups of 4 Pokemon who are up to the challenge.

I beat mewtwo barely with 1 Pokemon left. We had two Grimmsnarls that set light screen and reflect righty away then we had a assault vest goodra to tank special hits and then a necromza I think the Goodra could be subbed for tyrantitar with assault vest but then it is weak to max knuckle and psi strike and then 1 Grimmsnarl could be subbed for snorlax or a offensive Pokemon like dragupult. The information about mewtwo being limited in his build is incorrect Mewtwo will use special or physical!
