Flying-type Moves in Competitive Play

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Defog Feature.png
Flying-type Moves are generally uncommon as coverage moves and are typically only carried by Flying-type Pokemon that have STAB.

They do have a niche though as they deal super effective damage against Grass and Fighting-type Pokemon - two very common types in the metagame, or as support move such as Defog.

Flying/Ground Has Great Neutral Coverage

Pokemon Sword and Shield -Landorus Move Feature.png
Only three types resist Flying-type Moves naturally and these are easily overcome with a coverage move.

As a result, Flying-types that can learn a Ground-type Move can get perfect neutral coverage as the Ground-type move lets it hit Electric, Rock, and Steel-types for super effective damge.

Flying-type Dynamax Moves

With the introduction of Dynamax and Max Moves, Flying-type Moves have increased in usage due to becoming Max Airstream during Dynamax.

This Max Move has the secondary effect of increasing the user and it's ally's Speed by 1 Stage, making it an invaluable utility move for offensive-oriented teams!

It's not uncommon for Physical sweepers, such as Cinderace and Urshifu to carry a Flying-type Move so that it can get a Speed boost from Max Airstream during Dynamax!
