Access to brand new worlds means access to brand new ingredients, and there is almost no limit to the delicious foods and drinks a talented chef can prepare. |
As Gastronomy is a Novice skill, it can be learned without having to spend skill points on other skills in the Social skill tree. You just need to spend a skill point on Gastronomy to learn it.
The Gastronomy skill is automatically learned by the following backgrounds:
Beast Hunter | Chef | Pilgrim |
Rank | Challenge | Effects |
---|---|---|
1 | - | You can craft specialty food and drinks, and research additional recipes at a Research Lab. |
2 | Create 5 food or drink items. | You can research and craft gourmet food and drinks. |
3 | Create 25 food or drink items. | You can research and craft food and drink delicacies. |
4 | Create 50 food or drink items. | Crafting food and drinks occasionally doesn't use up resources. You can research and craft exotic recipes. |
Crafting any food or drink item from the Cooking Station will count towards completing the rank challenge for Gastronomy.
Perhaps the most accessible item to craft would be Distilled Water or Alien Jerky as they only require two ingredients that can be produced from a Greenhouse or Animal Husbandry Facility.
Food and drink ingredients can also be purchased from general goods vendors.
Most organic resources required for crafting food and drink items from the Cooking Station can be farmed from your outposts by building Greenhouses and Animal Husbandry Facilities.
To start raising flora or domesticating fauna, you need to have at least one rank of the Botany or Zoology skill, respectively. The outpost modules for these skills can also only be built on planets with local fauna or flora species you have scanned to 100% completion.
