There are 16 different shib hab types in Starfield. Each hab module can add different kinds of stations to your ship. Depending on the manufacturer of a hab module, the contents within might be slighltly different.

The Workshop Hab module is the best ship part to get early. It adds weapon, spacesuit, and industrial workbenches to your ship that allows you to craft weapon mods, armor mods, and components respectively using resources and materials.

Switch Between Hab Variants in the Ship Builder
When buying new Ship Parts from a Ship Services Technician on the Ship Builder screen, you might think that none of the useful Ship Habs like the Workshop, Science, and Infirmary Habs are available. However, it's likely that they are actually available within the Variant options for the Habs shown.
Look for Habs which have several Variant options and scroll through them, and you might be surprised to find that many of the Hab types are available even on early-game vendors like the Ship Services Technician in New Atlantis as shown in the image above.

What are Habs?
Ship's Living Quarters
Hab is short for Habitat modules. These modules are the living quarters of your ship's population. They increase the number of crew and passengers your ship can carry. They also allow you to construct different rooms and workstations within your ship.

Ship habs, depending on the type, will add and provide different workstations you can utilize to enhance your stats and capabilities, and to raise the chances of your survival during exploration and combat.
