Can You Kill NPCs?

Starfield - Can You Kill NPCs

You can very likely kill NPCs in Starfield, although not essential ones required for important quests. Read on for more info on whether you can kill NPCs in Starfield and what happens if you kill all NPCs.

Nonessential NPCs Can Likely Be Killed

Starfield - Nonessential NPCs

While it has not been officially confirmed whether or not you can kill NPCs, it is almost a certainty that you will be able to kill nonessential NPCs, as you have been able to do in previous Bethesda games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim.

Based on these previous games, we can surmise that NPCs who cannot be killed include NPCs related to the main quest, children, and some Companions and Crew Members.

Killing All NPCs Possible in Fallout: New Vegas

However, it is worth noting that while not developed by Bethesda, Fallout: New Vegas was a game where you could kill all NPCs save for one. It is unlikely that Bethesda will use this system for Starfield, as it will render the whole story unplayable.

Killing NPCs Teased

Starfield - Killing the Adoring Fan

While not explicitly depicted, it was heavily implied in the Starfield Direct that you could kill the Adoring Fan to remove the Hero Worshipped trait. It would be possible, then, to kill quest-related NPCs if their survival isn't vital to the completion of the quest.

What Happens When You Kill All NPCs?

Factions Can Put a Crime Bounty on You

Starfield - Freestar Collective Settler
Freestar Collective Settler
You gain access to special Freestar Collective dialogue options, and better rewards from some missions given by the faction. But, crime bounty towards other factions is greatly increased. (Can't be combined with any other faction allegiance trait.)
Starfield - Neon Street Rat
Neon Street Rat
You grew up on the mean streets of Neon. You gain access to special dialogue options, and better rewards from some missions on Neon. Crime bounty by other factions is greatly increased. (Can't be combined with any other faction allegiance trait.)
Starfield - Wanted
Wanted
Someone put a price on your head, and word has spread. Occasionally, armed mercenaries will show up and try to kill you, but being cornered gives you an edge - when your health is low, you do extra damage.

As evidenced by the Freestar Collective Settler, Neon Street Rat, and Wanted traits, you will be able to have a bounty placed on your head by offending factions. It is likely that killing NPCs from a faction will be one of the triggers for this.

List of All Traits

Likely Nothing Much Will Change

As with previous Bethesda games, you will be able to finish the main quest normally, since essential NPCs will be unkillable. The only difference will be that you won't have access to several side quests and XP and item rewards.
