The locked door found in the basement of The Lodge in Starfield opens automatically during the High Price to Pay mission. Learn how to unlock the door in the well, what it's purpose, and what's on the other side of it.

Opens During High Price to Pay Mission

Starfield - The Door in the Well Opened

The door in The Well automatically opens during the High Price to Pay main mission. Without giving away spoilers, the door is just used by the player as a passageway between The Lodge and The Well. It will also stay open even after the quest if you need to get to and from these places quickly.

The other side of the door seemed mysterious, but how to get there is pretty easy. Fast travel to your ship or to New Atlantis and move forward until you reach the city. Head to the left path and you'll see an establishment named Jemison Mercantile.

Access an Elevator to The Well

Starfield - New Atlantis Jemison Mercantile Elevator Location

Go to the right side of the building and from there is the elevator you'll be taking to head down to The Well.

you must pickpocket the guard sitting in the security booth nearby the door in the well

So, I've completed the Brown mission, you basically turn on some relays, has nothing to do with the door in the well. I also was able to get the key on Topher's body, I opened the safe, but the key is not able to open the door either. So I guess we're still not closer to opening this door. It does however lead to the sewers, the music playing at the door matches the music playing in the sewers.
