You will go back to your last save when you die in Starfield. Learn what happens when you die, and if dying has penalties or additional consequences.

Players that have played other Bethesda games have always practiced constantly saving, so when they die in game, they won't lose all the progress they've made so far until their death. With this in mind, save before and after combat, after significant discoveries, taking over enemy ships, or collecting valuable resources.

Be careful when saving, as you might manually save literally moments before you die, locking you into an endless loop where you instantly die the moment you reload the last save.

How to Save

No Additional Consequences

You won't receive any penalties or consequences when you die in-game. Bethesda games don't punish their players for dying, unlike in other games where you lose XP, lose items in your inventory, and other penalties.

To avoid easily dying, level up your character to gain skill points and unlock skills to further improve your combat prowess. Loot for good weapons and armor, and install mods to your equipment in workbenches to make them more powerful.
