Are Mechs Usable?

Starfield - Are Mechs Usable

Mechs cannot be piloted nor created in Starfield. Read on to learn if mechs are in the game, whether you will be able to pilot and craft mechs in Starfield.

Can You Pilot Mechs in Starfield?

Mechs Cannot be Used

Starfield - Mechs in Starfield

Starfield has mechs that were used by the Freestar Collective and the United Colonies during the Colony War. However, after the war ended, mechs were outlawed and left in ruins, making them unusable.

The Dev Q&A hinted that there's an "old mech battleground" but also confirmed that none of the mechs will be usable.

You Can Recruit Robot Companions

Starfield - Vasco Robot Companion

You will be able to a recruit robot companion called Vasco to support you in battle or help out in your ship and outposts. Vasco will act independently in combat and cannot be individually controlled.

Mechs Could Be Added Later On

Starfield - Mechs in Starfield

While there has been no official word on this, mechs being added later on is not outside the realm of possibility. Mechs may have been outlawed, but some working mechs may still exist in the Settled Systems, and it would be a shame not to be able to pilot one in the future.

Can You Create Mechs and Robots?

Creating Small Robots May Be Possible

In the Starfield Direct, we were able to see glimpses of a couple of small helper robots that roamed around your outpost. Perhaps these small non-combat robots may be the only robots in Starfield you can create.

Combat Mechs Cannot Be Crafted

In Starfield's research laboratory crafting menu, you will only be able to craft the following categories of items:

  • Pharmacology
  • Food and Drink
  • Outpost Development
  • Equipment
  • Weaponry

None of these include the option for a mech that you will be able to use in combat situations. However, we have yet to see the full extent of crafting in Starfield and whether you can actually create robots in the game.

What are Mechs?

Giant Robots That Can Be Piloted

Starfield - What are Mechs

Mechs are giant robots, usually humanoid in shape, that a human can ride and pilot from inside. Mechs can fulfill a variety of functions from combat to more civilian ones, like transport and cargo handling.

Mechs in Starfield were outlawed after the Colony War, so you will not be able to pilot a mech in Starfield. However, you will be able to see ruins and remains of mechs on some battlefields.
