You are Encumbered

Starfield - You are Encumbered
Exceeding your Mass Limit by carrying too much items will leave you encumbered. Being encumbered disables any form of fast traveling in addition to making any action you do consume more oxygen.

There are multiple ways to store items in Starfield. One useful way of storing items is through your ship's storage.

How to Access Ship Storage

You are in Combat

Starfield - You are in Combat
Being in combat doesn't allow you to fast travel. You can either defeat all nearby enemies or run away from them.

You are Near Hostile Enemies

Starfield - You are Near Hostile Enemies
Fast travel is disabled if enemies are actively looking for you.

You are Taking Damage

Starfield - You are Taking Damage
Taking health damage from Environmental Damage or from land mines will disable fast travel for a moment.

You are Docked

In some instances, players may need to manually return to their ship's cockpit to un-dock before boosting off.

You are in a Quest that Doesn't Allow Fast Travel

Quests such the first few quests do not allow players to fast travel up to a certain point of progressing the questline.

Your Location Does not Allow Fast Travel

Starfield - Cannot Fast Travel from Location
In certain location such as caves, mines, or large laboratories with hostile pirates, fast travel may be disabled for players. Regardless of whether you clear the area or not, you still have to get out of the area to use fast travel.

If you used Console Commands to enter the Dev Room. Use the console command coc CityNewAtlantisLodgeInt to teleport back to The Lodge

How to Access the Dev Room

You Do Not Have Enough Fuel to Reach Another System

Starfield - You Don
Fast Traveling to other systems require HE3 as fuel. Add HE3 tanks to your ship to increase fuel capacity. Alternatively, you can fast travel to a close system before fast traveling to your desired location.

You cannot fast travel to points-of-interest on the surface map that have not been discovered yet. Walking to that POI would be your only option.

You are Fast Traveling to an Unknown Location

This might be a fast travel bug players will rarely see. As the image shows, the fast travel target is discovered so there might be other unknown reasons for this fast travel error to show.

You are in Midair

Players cannot fast travel while midair. Simply exit the menu and fast travel once you land.
