It is recommended to take on Faction questlines as they will most likely introduce you to new weapons and armor. In addition, they also have specific missions that allow you to level up certain skills.

Mantis is the Best Early Side Quest

Starfield - Mantis Armor Quest Reward

Mantis is the best side quest to complete early on in the game as you can do the quest right away without having to even complete the second quest The Old Neighborhood.

The quest rewards players with the Legendary Mantis Helmet, Mantis Armor, and Mantis Pack, as well as the Razorleaf Starship which is a great early upgrade to the Frontier!

Are Side Quests Missable?

Faction Quests are Not Missable

It is currently not known if there are any side quests that are missable. We will update this section once we have confirmed if side quests are missable.

During the Dev Q&A, it is confirmed that faction quests can be completed as they are independent of one another. This means that it is possible to complete all Faction questlines in a single playthrough.

Starfield - Do the Main Quest to Unlock New Features

All Side Quests, including all Faction Questlines, can be completed at any point during the Main Story. However, spoilers once you enter the Unity at the end of the story, you'll be in the New Game Plus game mode, where your character will carry over but your quest progress wont.

Starfield - Speak with NPCs
You can obtain Side Quests by speaking with certain NPCs much like in previous Bethesda games. Side quests can also be added automatically after meeting certain conditions such as reaching a high enough friendship with a companion.

Complete Activities

Activities can lead you to loot, new discoveries while exploring, and even larger questlines. Complete Activities as you may discover side quests faster or lead you to quests that are hard to find.

Miscellaneous Quests

Miscellaneous Quests are side quests that are not tied to any storyline or faction. These are the quests that you usually get from civilian NPCs.

Mission boards are machines that have post missions that you can finish for extra credits and EXP. These missions are usually quick and simple tasks such as delivering items or hunting a bounty.
