To start crafting in Starfield, you'll first need to start and finish Research Projects. You'll need bring various resources and materials to a Research Lab to initiate a research project.
You can obtain these resources by gathering them yourself as you explore different Planets, or purchase them from different traders.

To begin crafting, you'll first need to research a project. Projects are divided into five categories, and you can research multiple projects of different categories at the same time.
Projects are unlocked through game progression, Skills, and through further Research.
Below is a list of the different research fields in Starfield. Projects can be initiated as long as you have the resources needed.

Pharmacology | Research Aid Items, medications, and performance-enhancing drugs. |
Food and Drink | Research higher quality food and drink items that provide health restoration and other buffs. |
Outpost Development | Research better outpost structures and modules to improve resource collection. |
Equipment | Research various Armor mods to augment your defenses. |
Weaponry | Research Weapon mods to aid your exploration. |
Once a project is finished, you'll be able to craft your researched item at respective workbenches or stations. You may have to bring more resources and materials, depending on the item you wish to craft.
You can craft Weapon Mods and modify your weapons in Weapon Workbenches to make them better.
Some mods provide upgrades such as improving your weapon's damage, ammo capacity, optics, or even give them unique properties.

You can also craft different Armor Mods in Spacesuit Workbenches to aid in your survival when exploring hostile planets and battling enemies.
Other items you can craft include food in Cooking Stations and aid consumables in Pharmaceutical Labs. These items usually restore health, and others grant different types of buffs.
You can craft manufactured components in Industrial Workbenches. These manufactured components are used in various research projects.
