There are four confirmed romanceable characters in Starfield and all of them are part of the main crew of the Constellation.
All four are met during the Main Quest, with Sarah Morgan being the first companion that you can start building approval at the very start of the game.
In Starfield, romancing a character locks your commitment to them as a romantic partner and will dislike it if you flirt with another companion.
While it's possible to flirt with multiple characters, agreeing to romance them at the end of their companion quest will you lock you to that character as a romantic partner.
You can romance characters by increasing your affinity with them by following their questline, performing actions that they approve of, and unlocking more conversation options with them, that will allow them to open up to you.
Compared to previous games, the relationship system in Starfield is more complex and you need to be careful with your in-game actions and responses. Committing a crime and acquiring a bounty, for example, will cause your companion to leave you during a mission and even threaten to abandon your crew entirely!
You have more chances to gain approval from any companion when you do sidequests with them as an active companion by taking certain dialogue choices and actions.
As a result, avoid rushing the main quest if you plan to improve your companion's approval since you'll have less dialogue options to get approval from the companion you are planning to romance.
Companion | Romance Quest |
---|---|
Sarah Morgan | In Memoriam |
Sam Coe | Matters of the Hart |
Andreja | Divided Loyalties |
Barrett | Breach of Contract |
Each of the four romanceable companions have a quest that you need to complete to progress with romancing them. To unlock this quest, you need to make your affinity with that character reach a high enough level by doing actions or choosing dialogue options that they like.

This article is incorrect. Multiple companions can be romanced and married. Here "married" is defined as you have their commitment token, even if their actual romance level is at 2 instead of 3. This means ALL of them can appear in the Unity scene. Notably you cannot marry Andreja if you're not totally single, but you break up with the other three you married before (grief permeates the ship), marry Andreja, then make up with the other three (which makes Andreja mad, but not single)
