As a professor, you'll likely have experience with lots of Science Skills. You can pursue learning more about planets with the Astrophysics, Surveying, and Astrodynamics skills and focus on specific subjects with Geology and Botany.
Scavenging is good to have so you can get materials for crafting with the Gastronomy and Chemistry skills. Research Methods and Special Projects are great skills to have in pursuit of your research.
As a professor, you also hold knowledge in high regard, and as such, the Persuasion and Diplomacy skills are your best way of dealing with trouble.

As a professor, violence isn't always the answer, so electromagnetic weapons are the best option since they can disable enemies by stunning them. However, if you do need to fight, keeping melee weapons and rifles on hand can get you out of hairy situations.

You'll encounter hostile aliens and space pirates in your exploration, so you'll need to protect yourself from these equipping armor that reduces all damage types. If you're out surveying, equip armor with the right resistances to deal with a planet's harsh conditions.

The Alien DNA and Terra Firma traits both raise your health and oxygen, making them useful for staying alive while exploring. Terra Firma may be more favorable if you'll be gathering information on the surface. The Empath trait ties to a professor's passion for enhancing others both mentally and emotionally.
