Starfield - How to Target A Ship

Target a ship's engine in Starfield by getting the Targeting Control Systems skill. Learn more on how to use Target Lock, and how to lock on to a ship's engine.

Get the Targeting Control Systems Skill

Starfield - Targeting Control Systems

The first step you will need to do is get the Targeting Control Systems skill in the Tech skill tree. This will unlock the Target Lock feature which allows you to attack a specific part of an enemy ship, including its engines.

Hover Your Crosshair on the Ship

Starfield - Lock on to Ship

Once you engage with an enemy ship, you must hover your crosshair on to the ship until it locks on. You will know you are locked on to them once your crosshair indicates ''LOCK'' on your target.

Activate Target Lock and Select ENG

Starfield - Target Lock on ENG

Afterwards, a button prompt will appear letting you Target Lock on the enemy. Press the appropriate button to enter Target Lock mode, which will slow down time and allow you to choose a ship part to attack, similar to the VATS system in Fallout.

When you're in Target Lock mode, select the ENG bar to aim at a ship's engine. It is recommended to use Lasers instead of the other weapons so that you can take down their shields, and that you don't accidentally destroy the ship entirely.

Board the Ship

Starfield - Dock on to Ship

After taking down the ship's engines, a button prompt will appear which will let you Dock your ship. Press the button and board the ship so that you can take down the enemies inside and take the loot or contraband that they have. You can also take the ship for yourself if you have a high enough Piloting skill.
