Doing the main quests first allows you to open up new features and level up fast in the progress. This is also the simplest and most linear way of navigating the world Starfield has to offer.

On the other hand, prioritizing the side content first could make the main story might too easy, as there is no level scaling in place.

It is recommended to prioritize side content if anything catches your interest, if you need to raise your companion's affinity, or if you need to level up so that the main quests aren't too difficult.
