Highlight the Whole Ship to Find the Unattached Module

Starfield - Highlighted Ship
If you are having some trouble finding the unattached part, you can highlight the whole ship and it will not highlight the unattached parts.

To do this, double-click your ship with the Left Mouse Button for PC, or press the LB button twice for console.

Find an Appropriate Slot for the Unattached Module

Starfield - Highlighted Slots
When holding an item in the Ship Builder Menu, some slots that are compatible with that part will be highlighted with a light-blue circle.

Some slots are reserved for smaller parts like weapons. If you do not have a spare slot, many structural or hab modules will provide an expansion of modules slots.
