Before docking a ship, make sure it's the only ship nearby. After eliminating the other ships, you'll have to cripple the target ship's engine before having an option to dock it. Lock on to the targeted vessel and hit the Dock button to start docking. After docking, board the ship to enter it.
To fully take control of the ship, you'll have to kill all the crew members aboard. They're usually found in the cockpit, but there might be enemies in some parts of the ship as well.
After killing all crew members, enter the ship's cockpit, and sit on the pilot seat to claim the ship and make it yours. You can now use the ship to travel, but beware of certain dangers since your new ship received heavy damage from the earlier dogfight, and needs repairs ASAP.
The previous ship you used before hijacking a ship will appear in the Shipbuilder menu, so don't worry about leaving it behind.
You will not be able to claim a Class B or C ship if your Piloting skill isn't high enough. You'll need to have a Rank 3 Piloting Skill to pilot Class B ships, and Rank 4 to pilot Class C ships.
It is possible to register your hijacked ship without needing to talk to a Ship Technician at a spaceport.
After sitting down to claim the ship, open the Pause menu and navigate to the Ship tab. From there, you can see the ship you hijacked and select the Make Home Ship button. This allows you to register the hijacked ship from the menu instantly.
Note that doing the above steps will automatically undock your original ship from the hijacked ship. To return to your original ship, dock with it again and sit on that ship's pilot seat. Open the Ship menu to set your original ship as your home ship.
