Underwater exploration in Starfield is likely but may be limited to locations like ocean planets and caves. Find out if underwater exploration is possible, where you can go, and if you can build underwater Outposts in this guide.

Is There Underwater Exploration?

Underwater Exploration Likely

Exploring and surveying underwater may be possible in Starfield because of its vast universe. It is highly likely to have ocean planets, aquatic cities, and underwater caves in the roster of explorable locations.

Ocean Planets

We can expect at least 1 ocean planet in the estimated 100 star systems in Starfield. With Bethesda balancing realism and gameplay, exploring the depths of an aquatic planet is likely but still unconfirmed.

Volii Alpha

Starfield - Underwater Exploration in Neon City
Underwater exploration may be an option in Volii Alpha, home planet to the pleasure city of Neon. Neon was initially built as a fishing platform on an aquatic world so going underwater in the surrounding areas of the city may be a possibility.

Underwater Biomes

It is highly likely for players to encounter underwater biomes which have special flora and fauna. Players may need to go under to scan or collect these.

Underwater Caves

Underwater caves may also be on the table for players to collect items or scan special flora and fauna, similar to underwater biomes. This could also be scaled down to small areas within caves which can only be reached by diving.

Can You Build Underwater Outposts?

Underwater Outposts May Be Possible

Outposts can be built almost anywhere, so it may be possible for you to construct one underwater. However, these Outposts may have restrictions when it comes to size and crew assignments.
