Upgrading your ship with a Workshop Module allows you access to a weapon workbench, industrial workbench, and a spacesuit workbench within the interiors of your ship.

You'll be able to find this workbench in The Lodge's basement, which is accessible after completing the first main quest, One Small Step.

Workbenches can be built on your outposts. This requires the resource materials above and an outpost tower.
Most vendors will have a workbench of their respective trade. A good example of a Ship Vendor with a Workbench you can use is in the Akali's starport.
