Armor may be paired in terms of armor sets, or they may be individual, isolated set pieces. Whichever pieces you pick, matching whole sets do not give bonuses. Make sure to pay attention to their stats, mods, and quality.
Apparel functions similarly to armor, the difference being that the modifications they have are more limited and they do not come with qualities like Calibrated or so. You can toggle them as your default wear within establishments.

There are three damage types for damage reduction and four environmental resistances to help reduce and prevent status afflictions from harsh planet environments, alien creatures, and enemy weapon effects.
Types of Armor | |

Spacesuit | Packs |
Helmets | Apparel |
The spacesuit can be regarded as your main piece of armor since it can offer the most damage reduction, resistances, and other defensive effects at higher rarity. It is recommended for players to prioritize getting a good spacesuit to sustain longer in combat.
Since the spacesuit weighs the most, it is also nice to know that the mass of your armor can slightly affect your mobility. Due to this, players who want to move quickly may want to opt for spacesuits that have less mass.
The packs are the armor item that gives the second most amount of damage reduction and resistances. It also lets you use the Boost Pack to extend your jump and dash range if you have the Boost Pack Training Skill.
Helmets are another necessary piece of armor whenever you explore uninhabitable planets or in space stations to avoid suit failure. It also grants you a decent damage reduction but does not offer much for environmental resistances.
Lastly, the apparel is what you wear underneath your spacesuit or whenever you are in habitable environments. It only gives you a little damage reduction and resistances, but is still worth having to boost your defenses as much as possible.
There are three types of damage reduction players should be aware of when equipping armor, specifically Physical, Energy and EM damage reduction.
Physical is arguably the most important form of damage reduction since you will encounter plenty of Physical damage in the game. It includes all ballistic weapons, melee weapons, explosives, and alien creature attacks. All of these types of damage can be experienced throughout all stages of the game.
Energy damage reduction primarily lessens Energy-based damage from laser weapons, thermal explosives, robots, and turrets. While it is not as frequent as Physical damage, you will still encounter a handful of enemies that deal this type of damage, especially in the mid to late game.
EM, or electromagnetic, damage reduction focuses on decreasing incoming damage from EM weapons and explosives. It is the most uncommon type of damage you will encounter since you only encounter enemies who use these types of weapons towards the end.
Along with damage reduction, there are also environmental resistances you can have to avoid getting status afflictions or damaged from harsh planet environments, alien creatures, and enemy weapon effects.
All Environmental Resistances Explained
Your Thermal resistance protects you from hot or cold climates so that you do not get Burns or Frostbite. It also reduces the negative effects you receive from fire and ice attacks that weapons and explosives can emit.
Airborne resistance specifically help you against contaminants in the air that you can experience from plants and the environment. It can help you avoid getting infections and poisoning.
Corrosive resistance can aid you from acidic or corrosive substances that can come from the environment, alien creature attacks, and enemy weapons. They also help you reduce the damage-over-time it deals, and can circumvent infections and poisoning.
Lastly, Radiation resistance can defend you from radioactive items or materials that you can find from items or environments. Particularly, it stops you from getting radiation posioning when you are exposed to the radiation for too long.
Players can mod their armor at any Spacesuit Workbenches. You can easily find one in the basement of the Lodge in New Atlantis. You can apply 4 different mods to each armor piece which increases its damage reduction, resistances, or adds new effects. Although, it is recommended that you only modify armor items that are Rare or higher.
Where to Find Spacesuit Workbenches
You can make companions wear specific armor by trading with them and putting it into their inventory. When you trade with them, make sure to switch to your inventory as indicated on the bottom of the screen. Then, select the armor items you want to give and they will equip it if is better than what they are currently wearing.
If they refuse to use the armor, you can also take their old armor and put it in your inventory. This will make sure that they wear the armor you gave since it is their only choice.
