If you choose the Kid Stuff trait for your character, eventually, you'll receive the Wanderwell as a free ship from your parents when you visit them in the apartment in New Atlantis' Residential District.
At some point during your game, you might find a note named Secret Outpost as a random loot from a defeated enemy. Reading the note will initiate a mission called Mantis where you will be tasked to go to Denebola I-b in the Denebola system (level 30). At the end of this side mission, you will find a ship called the Mantis that's free for you to board and take.
If you go to Denebola I-b without finding the Secret Outpost note first, the point of interest will not appear as a landing point when you visit.
You will receive the Star Eagle ship as a reward when you complete the questline for the Freestar Collective faction. The questline ends with The Hammer Falls quest.
Sometime after completing the A High Price to Pay main mission, you'll receive a side quest called Overdesigned from Walter Shroud that will have you heading to the Stroud Eklund Staryard in Dalvik. Complete the side mission to receive a Kepler ship for free.

How to Get Starborn Guardian Ship
You can get free ships by docking hostile ships after you've dealt enough damage. Board the ship and eliminate enemies to fly away with the vessel.
You can also provoke neutral and civilian ships to turn them hostile by hailing them and starting a conversation when you're close enough. This will turn them hostile, allowing you to treat them as such and steal their ship.

You can increase your character's Deception Skill to increase the chances of NPCs to surrender to your demands.
