Use Mantle to Climb Ledges

Mantle is a technique that is used to get to higher areas through climbing ledges. It can be an effective way of traversing and navigating environment since it lets you snap to a ledge.

There are many planets to visit in Starfield. Thus, you will encounter multiple environments that test your navigational and traversal skills. Make sure to be prepared for any terrain obstacle that comes your way.

How Does Free Roam Work?

Hold the Forward and Jump Button

Press and hold the Forward + Jump buttons at the same time until your player character does the ledge climbing animation. Mantling should work on all ledges of the waist or slightly above head height.

Mantling Requires Oxygen

Starfield - Oxygen Gauge

The Mantle action costs oxygen and it shares its oxygen (O2) management with other actions such as Power Attacks and sprinting. You will want to keep a lookout on your oxygen gauge when you plan to climb ledges.

Starfield - Boost Pack

While using your Boost Pack skill can get you across areas more easily, mantling is the traditional and economical way to climb ledges and traverse an environment without having to rely on the Boost Pack.

You will want to use the Boost Pack instead for quick navigation across large gaps, or high areas which you cannot normally access by mantling.
