Avoid getting encumbered by dropping heavy items from your inventory in Starfield. Read on to learn what being encumbered means, how to remove encumbered status, and more!

How to Avoid Getting Encumbered

Drop, Store, or Sell Heavy Items

Starfield - Drop or Store Heavy Items

The quickest way to remove the Encumbered status is to drop heavy items such as extra weapons, spacesuits, packs, helmets, and miscellaneous items on the ground.

If you don't want to just waste these items by dropping them, you can perservere through the Encumbered status and make your way to your ship or the nearest shop. You can store items in your ship's cargo hold behind the cockpit or you can sell these items for credits.

Where to Store Items

Check your Spacesuits Menu

Spacesuits tend to individually be the heaviest items in your inventory. You should also make sure to check if you have a large amount of excess/dupes of any non-essential item.

Level Up Physical Skills

Starfield - Weight Lifting Weight Lifting Starfield - Fitness Fitness

Adding Skill Points to Physical Skills like Weight Lifting or Fitness should deal with the Encumbered status. Weightlifting directly helps by increasing your carrying capacity by 10 kilograms at Rank 1. Obtaining Rank 4 at this skill increases it even further by 100 kilograms.

Fitness can help alleviate the problem by giving you more Oxygen.

Physical Skills

Toggle tgm to Enable God Mode on the Console Command

Typing tgm to enable God Mode stops you from getting encumbered. Even if your mass exceeds your current carrying capacity, your oxygen meter will not go down as you move around.

If you are encumbered, you will slowly lose oxygen when you move around the area. In addition, running while encumbered consumes more oxygen than you normally would.
