You can purchase most ships from ship technicians. They are usually located around a spaceport in most cities or staryards. Some ship parts companies also have dedicated showrooms where they sell ships built using their parts.

Refreshing a Ship Vendor's Inventory

Note: Refreshing inventory does not mean it will change their stock completely. It is possible for everything to change, or for only one item to change.

You can also reset a ship vendor's inventory by skipping time. First you will need to travel to Venus in the Sol star system and sleep for 24 Local Hours on your ship. Then, go back to a ship vendor and check his inventory.

This method works the best since 1 Hour on Venus is equal to 100 Hours in Universal Time. Sleeping there ensures you skipped enough time to reset every known ship vendor in the game.

How to Wait and Skip Time

Steal From NPCs

You can get free ships from hostile NPCs by docking and boarding their ship and eliminating them from within. You can also provoke neutral and civilian ships to turn them hostile by hailing them and starting a conversation when you're close enough.

Some quests will reward players with ships. As an example, the Mantis side quest will reward players with the Razorleaf ship at the end of the mission.

Ship Classes

Achilles II

There are three ship classes or tiers in the game wherein 'C' is the highest tier, 'B' is the second tier, and 'A' is the lowest tier. These tiers are dictated by the ship's Reactor. Players can initially only pilot A tier ships, but you can unlock the ability the pilot better ships by investing in the Piloting Skill.
Additionally, you can only upgrade or attach ship parts that are the same tier as your reactor. Due to this, you will need to upgrade your reactor first if you want to add higher tier parts to your ship.

Players can assign crew members or companions to a ship by going to the ship menu and pressing the 'Crew' button indicated on the bottom right. Assigning crew members gives your ship perks based on the perk that your crew members have.

The ship is the only way players can travel between planets, staryards, and star systems in the game. You may also need to upgrade your grav drive if you want to jump to farther star systems without stopping by at a nearer system.

You can also engage in space battles and fight other ships out in space. This lets you hijack other ships and steal their precious contraband or the ship itself.
