Planetary Traits Explained

Discoverable Characteristics

Planetary Traits are a planet’s characteristics which you can discover by scanning and surveying different unexplored geological features on a planet.

Unlocking Planetary Traits contributes to a planet's 100% survey completion status. Completed surveys can reward Survey Data that can be sold to earn money.

Astrophysics skill increases chances of discovering Planetary Traits

Starfield - Astrophysics Astrophysics

A planet can be scanned to get its initial details when you are present in orbit. If you have at least a point invested in your Astrophysics skill, you should also be able to also scan planets and moons from a different planet or system depending on your the skill's rank.

How to Unlock Planetary Traits

Scan Unexplored Geological Features

Starfield - Diseased Biosphere Scan Unlock

These features can be singled out by their unique name, such as the Infected Grove for obtaining the Diseased Biosphere trait.

Unlocking Planetary Traits is part of completing a 100% survey of the planet. You will have to land and explore on a planet to scan unexplored geological features that will reveal a Planetary Trait.

These features can usually be found at unique points of interest (such ones with a Natural label), but icons may differ per location. The amount of times needed to scan certain features for unlocking a Planetary Trait may vary.

The amount of traits per planet to be surveyed are listed on the left side of your HUD as you explore.

How to Use the Hand Scanner

Look Around the Planet

Starfield - Planet Resource Map

When looking for multiple traits on a single planet, you will want to explore the planet's different biomes. In your planetary map view, you can select on a part of the planet to determine what biome you will land in.

Biome differences may easily be spotted by the differences of color on a planet's surface (usually signalling the presence of a certain resource).

Rank Up the Astrophysics Skill

Starfield - Astrophysics for Planetary Traits

The Astrophysics skill, which can be found under the Science Skill tree, increases your chances of discovering a Planetary Trait even without surveying a location to 100% when ranked up.

The first rank of the Astrophysics skill will give you a 10% chance to automatically detect a Planetary Trait after a planetary scan, with the highest rank offering a 50% chance to unlock traits of planets within 30 Light Years.
